Prophylaxis and hygiene in Prodent Gdansk
- the key to health

Why is hygiene important?

It has long been known that prevention is better than cure, which is why prevention is so important. Thanks to it, we can prevent the occurrence of a problem or delay its development by implementing appropriate treatment immediately. Human health is the well-being of the entire organism, so sick teeth and gums – that’s a sick person.

Prevention is all the action taken to prevent disease. The most common dental disease is tooth decay. It is caused by bacteria and is easily contracted even from family members.

What can we do to best protect our teeth from decay?

Above all, it is important to remember to eat a complete diet. Our diet should be rich in products full of micronutrients, calcium and vitamins, especially Vitamin C and D3 and coenzyme Q10. Equally important is good oral hygiene, regular check-ups with the dentist and dental hygienist. It is also advisable to avoid stress and eliminate addictions – especially smoking.

At Prodent, we encourage our patients to:

  • periodic oral check-ups to detect outbreaks of caries, gum disease or inflammation around the roots,
  • regular visits to the hygienist to remove plaque and tartar -scaling and sandblasting,
  • taking X-rays – especially orthopantomography – for accurate diagnosis,
  • proper and regular tooth cleaning.(We give instruction and present a range of devices and appliances to support our efforts),
  • sealing of deciduous and permanent teeth with fluoride varnish in the form of fruit-flavoured foam

Excellent oral hygiene is the way to maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

Types of hygiene treatments performed at the Prodent clinic:

What does an oral review at Prodent look like?

In order to obtain the most reliable information on the state of our patient’s oral health, the oral health check-up consists of several elements. The visit begins with the completion of a health questionnaire, followed by the doctor taking a detailed history and assessing the condition of the teeth, tongue, gums and buccal mucosa. He or she carefully checks the tightness of all current fillings and restorations. The next step is to check the gum pockets for periodontitis, assess the occlusion and the contacts between the upper and lower teeth. After the visit, each patient is given precise indications for further treatment.

Teeth sealing

Sealing is a quick and very simple method of protecting permanent teeth in children (molars and premolars). Permanent teeth appear around the age of six and are initially not fully mineralised and are very susceptible to decay Sealing with a special fluoride varnish will ensure that the teeth safely pass through the mineralisation period and the young person will be cavity-free in later life.

Hygienization, i.e. scaling and sandblasting

Scaling is the professional cleaning of the tooth surface from deposit and tartar with a special ultrasonic tip and polishing with a polishing paste. In the case of deeper-seated particles, sandblasting is necessary, especially in patients who drink coffee and tea or smoke cigarettes. After the hygiene treatment, the hygienist carries out fluoridation, which replenishes the tooth structure with fluoride.

Rooth planning – deep scaling, necessary in situations where tartar builds up in the gum pockets and causes not only inflammation of the gums, but also of the bone holding the teeth and can cause tooth loosening and loss.

Teeth varnishing

Varnishing is a prophylactic treatment involving the coating of teeth with fluoride varnish. It is safe, pleasant for the patient and completely painless. Varnishing is recommended primarily for children and adolescents as caries prophylaxis, but also for adult patients after hygienization, with a high susceptibility to caries and with the use of orthodontic appliances.

Let us remember that regular hygiene not only guarantees the health of our teeth and gums, but also that of the entire body.

Hygiene treatments are necessary before treatment:

  • Prosthodontic – prior to the fabrication of porcelain veneers, all-ceramic crowns and bridges,
  • Conservative – before diagnosis of carious cavities and placement of fillings ,
  • Implantology – prior to the placement of implants and thereafter for a long-term guarantee of their maintenance,
  • Paradontosis – is the first key stage and later as a maintenance treatment e.g. curettage,
  • Orthodontic – when using braces,
  • Surgical – preventing tooth extractions to eliminate the risk of infection.
