Orthodontics
This is a field concerned with the treatment of irregularities in tooth alignment and disorders in the structure of the bones of the dental system (alveolar processes, maxilla, mandible). Malocclusions can be acquired, congenital, or hereditary. Congenital defects develop during the prenatal period (before the child’s birth). The most common congenital defects include cleft palate, hypodontia, and syndromes with disorders of the facial skull structure. These defects may be inherited in subsequent generations. Hereditary defects are those that parents pass on to their children, who then pass them on to subsequent generations. Such defects include, for example, hypodontia (absence of certain tooth buds), diastema, and skeletal defects (disorders in the structure and mutual proportions of the jaw bones) such as prognathism (excessive mandibular growth), skeletal open bite, and skeletal deep bite. Acquired defects are those that develop after birth as a result of harmful internal and external factors. Internal factors include, for example, various systemic diseases, hormonal disorders, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and others. External factors include, for example, postural defects, various harmful habits (e.g., thumb sucking, nail biting), and disorders of proper oral muscle function (tongue, lips, cheeks, muscles moving the mandible), which include, for example, mouth breathing, speech defects, and persistent infantile swallowing patterns. The development of acquired malocclusions is also contributed to by untreated caries of primary teeth and their premature loss.
Our clinic offers orthodontic treatment for children and adults, from simple malocclusions to complex cases requiring interdisciplinary orthodontic-surgical-prosthetic treatment. Our offer includes:
Removable appliances are manufactured in a dental laboratory based on a plaster model of the patient’s jaws. They are most commonly used in children and adolescents during the growth period. A properly designed removable appliance allows for highly effective orthodontic therapy, provided there is strict cooperation from the patient. This type of appliance has a beneficial effect on the proper development of the craniofacial complex and on tooth alignment. They often allow for the correction of malocclusions without the need for tooth extraction.
Trainers are a type of removable appliance. They are made of elastic silicone, and their application does not require taking impressions of the patient’s jaws. Such an appliance is selected based on the type of malocclusion and the patient’s age.
Trainers are extremely useful in patients with abnormal habits and dysfunctions (thumb sucking, pacifier sucking, nail biting, speech defects, habitual mouth breathing, etc.)
Fixed appliances are those that the patient cannot remove from the oral cavity independently. All fixed appliances used in our practice operate using the SWA technique (straight wire appliance), which allows for excellent treatment results every time. Proper tooth alignment is programmed into the slots of brackets bonded to the teeth and “read” through preformed orthodontic archwires inserted into these slots, made of special metal alloys with shape memory. Properly planned treatment and correct bracket placement guarantee the desired tooth movement and, consequently, excellent and stable treatment results in the form of proper occlusion and a beautiful, harmonious smile.
